Dr. Putman is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Laughlin Fellow and member of the American College of Psychiatrists. A past President of the Central (now American) Neuropsychiatric Association, he is Board Certified in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

A graduate of Austin College in Sherman, Texas, Dr. Putman received his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1982.  He completed his internship and residency in General Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he was Chief Resident, in 1986.

In addition to his private practice of Psychiatry in Austin, Texas, he lectures and consults regularly on psychiatric diagnoses and practice, with particular focus on mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Putman also serves as a supervisor for the Austin Graduate Medical Education/UT Medical Branch Residency Program in Psychiatry.

In addition to his scientific publications, Dr. Putman has recently published a handbook for patients and their families about Bipolar Disorder and other unstable mood disorders (see  Books).
